Branch 50th Anniversary
The Branch celebrated its 50th Anniversary on the 19th, 20th and 21st of October. A Celebration Dinner was held in Gallagher’s Hotel on Friday night in honour of the occasion. There were Comhaltas members in attendance from all Branches in Co. Donegal, others came from Leitrim, and Antrim. The Coventry Branch which is twined with Letterkenny travelled especially for the weekend and added immensely to the occasion. The Ulster Council was representated by Chairman Pat Beagan and Vice Chairman Eamonn Graham. There were special presentations to the families of key members who had played important roles in the establishment and fostering of the Branch and to others who are still happily with us. Those honoured were Hughie Mc Govern, Paddy Tunney, Marjorie Mc Daid, Bernadette Watson and Billy Gibson.
On Saturday the Branch took a group of forty plus on a cultural/historical tour of North Donegal. Gartan, The Rock of Doon and Doon Well, Doe Castle, Carrigart, Milford, and Rathmullen from where the “Flight of the Earls “took place in 1607. The Branch secretary was an informative and entertaining tour guide. A memorable and unforgettable singing session took place on the return bus trip to Letterkenny.
On Sunday a special Traditional Music Mass was celebrated in the Church of the Irish Martyrs in the afternoon to mark the success of those 50 years of. Needless to say there was music in abundance on each of these nights and the Branch was truly proud of the weekend.
